Dual Fan Operation in a '88 GTA

I know this has been much discussed here but please bear with me. I am still confused with all the talk about mods and swtiches and what not....

I find that my drivers side fan comes on when the temp hits about 235-240. I have never seen the passenger side fan run at all. Enabling my air conditioning turn no fans on. It doesn't blow cold either as I'm sure the freon is very low.

Anyway, what is the factory operation of the dual fan setup in a '88 GTA with air conditioning????

Thanks again for all your help!

i believe the correct functioning of the fans, is the drivers side turns on first. and the passenger side fan turns on at 238*.. however someone might of rewired or hooked up ur fans different. it sounds like maybe ur passenger side fan has either a bad relay. or bad wiring, which might explain why the other fan turns on at 238*. do a check on ur fan relays. one relay (usualy the secondary fan relay) is located on the passenger side fender, near the air filter.. the other relay (usualy the primary) is located on the radiator support brace on the passenger side. in the same area as the first, but closer to the charcol canister..

this chart should help. if u have more questions or are confused or need more details. then let us know..

I could use some more specifics if possible.

1. Is the sensor in the radiator the fan switch? Or what is it?

2. Which fan is the coolant sensor tied into?

3. Are there fusable links for the fans and if so where are they located?

4. Are there any other sensor/switches I should look for?

Again, sorry for beating a dead horse but I am going to the junkyard and the auto parts places this weekend for the sensors and relays and want to get everything squared away. I got a brand new air dam to put on as well. The new radiator cap solved my boiling over into the overflow problem. So I am getting close to completely restored engine/cooling system. Then it's on to the headlights, blower motor, and body work.

Thanks in advance again!

Shouldn't the primary fan (driver's side) still turn on at about 220? How could a dead relay on the secondary fan cause this?

Will the relay from a '85 work okay? It looks the same but has a slightly different part number.

It is p#14103304
