temp gauge! HELP!

I had my 86 TA takin down to a shop to get the 305 TPI swapped with a 350 TPI. The shop called today and said that they were having a problem with the tempeture gage. They said the gage was saying it was running at 250-260 degrees. He has a tool to take the temp of the engine and he said its not running hot at all. What could be wrong? He did also say that the car is running great. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

i just called the shop and he said he has already replaced the sending unit 2 times and has eliminated that. He thinks it is the gauge itself. He said he might have to put in an aftermarket temp gauge? Cant i just replace the temp gauge with another one that is the same?

yeah you could. i had a camaro that the guage was off by 20-30 degree's so i just pulled the needle out and when the fan kicked on i put the needle back on 220 which was the temp. the fan kicks on at. you could always live with it. that's cheaper than anything. having a new guage put in will cost a pretty penny from what i've heard.

i called the shop again to find out if he knew what it was yet. He said he took it out for a drive with a different gauge hooked up and he said it was running at 210 and started going up to 215. He put in a new thermostat that is supposed to kick in the fans at 195*. He also said he didn't drive it too much but will get it out on the freeway in the morning and go from there. Im thinking either the new heavy duty radiator is bad or the thermostat he put in is bad. So i guess its not the gauges. Any ideas now? Thanks in advance! :hail:
