My newest toy is an '89 camaro RS with a 350.....this car is a headache......it continously overheats, I can't go more than 5 miles without having to cool her down. I have cleaned the radiator, put in a new fan, just about anything that might make it run hot...and it still runs hot. Anyone have any suggestions?

 

Change the thermostat.

 

checked for an air dam? change the stat

 

Sorry, I should have said that I already changed the thermostat...twice.

 

define overheat...these cars are designed to run about 220 degrees from the factory. Is it just the guage showing a temp or are you getting steam and boil over? Have you replaced your rad cap, the system needs to be pressurized to work right I think a 16lb cap is whats required. Is your fan cycling on and off?

Does the car overheat at idle or at cruise or both?

 

is it an aftermarket 350? i put a built 350 in replace of my 305 and had alot of overheating problems just like you do and did everything from gettin the big 31x19 griffin radiator and switchin themostats and hoses and water pumps and fans with no help.. it ended up bein my aftermarket pulleys. witch i replaced yesterday and problem soved yyeeeaahhh. but still not sure if itll overheat around town i havent given it a chance and hopelly wont. but it made a big difference on highway speeds so im happy i can get to work just fine. on the highway it barely goes up to 200 but starts rising quick as soon as i get into town. so im gonna try yet another waterpump (one of those hiflow ones) to hopefully solve the in town. hope it helps

 

keeping in mind that the coolant mixture is right, the thermostat is good, the rad and rad cap is good, the water pump is good, no leaking hoses , and heatercore is good..

also check that your guage is accurate

usually when overheating on the highway it due to a collapsing lower rad hose, air dam, some debris blocking the airflow throught the rad...

overheating in traffic usually casued by fan(s) not coming on..


but overheating so quickly there must be a major blockage somewhere..

any more info you can give us??
