Nice and Dumb Question
I am kinda embarrassed about asking this but what the heck-
What is the difference between a short and long water pump?
I ask this because I am going to order an under drive pulley set for the 86 IROC-

you have the long pump. I believe only some of the old vettes had the short one. I've never actually seen one, that proves how common they are.
To answer your question, the short pump has a shorter body, bringing the impeller and pulley closer to the timing cover, for applications with no room in the front of the engine bay.

Hot rod guys tend to use them so that there is more clearance for the engines accesories while it is shoe horned is an old car.
The short pump puts the backing plate of the water pump very close the timing chain cover.
