How Much for new Radiator?
How Much for new Radiator?
Well every day it seems that my '89 IROC-Z's radiator is putting down more and more coolant. And yes, the hoses are fine, they aren't leaking. It is the origional radiator and someone had tried to patch it in the past but did a very poor job at it. I want to get a new/rebilt radiator before it takes a big **** once summer gets here. My exhaust is all done, so I am planning once I get the radiator I can put in the Hypertech or Jet chip in along with a cooler thermostat. So how much can I expect to pay for a shop to put a new radiator in for me? Will they get me a new one or re-build mine? (New core or whatever.) Tell me what you think. -89IRO

The stock GM replacement runs around 160-200 buck depending on where you go to get it. All GM units are new, they don't rebuild them and there is no core charge. Same with water pumps now, they are strictly new units. There are a lot of choices. GMSPO part# is 52453813. List price is $295, it can be had for $147.54 at www.gmpartsdirect.com. It is really a piece of cake to change however you should be charged no more than 1hr labor for the entire job. Labor rates vary so I just gave you average time.

O.K., thanks for the info. I'm going to stop by the local radiator shop and my mechanic soon to see what they want for the GM. So the GM is an exact stock replacement right? That would be fine for my car right, or do I need a flashy aftermarket one? Well if the origional thing lasted for 13 years, I guess it is good quality, duh! Oh, and while I'm at it I think I want to replce the water pump. Does GM make a stock replacement for that too? If so how much? Or would I be better off with a nice edelbrock one which they say flows more water, faster or something. -89IRO

GM supplies pumps too. They run around $110 bucks again depending on where you buy it. Service places will full pop you on price, probably full list and then maybe a little more. You might do well to just buy one and take it somewhere and get it installed. The GM Harrison rad is a good quality unit, I feel it is made better than most aftermarket units with the exception of the very high performance units. It's up to you where you go and how much you spend but there is usually no going wrong when you use OE parts.
