Re: If you own an '84, '85 or '86>>
84 350 HO - Came with 1 electric fan and one carburetor fan (which was a dealer install directed by GM for all 84's late in the year that had not been sold yet, supposedly to prevent vapor lock after the car shuts off because of the high temp the engine runs at). Thermostat is 195 degrees, electric fan is set to turn on at 236 degrees. Electric fan turns off after the car drops back to 200 when the car is moving again instead of sitting in traffic and the air dam puches air up to the radiator. These parts worked perfectly until the motor threw a rod at 85,000 mileson original engine last year. The carb fan always seemed useless because there was never any gas left in the carb to start the car up and i had to let the electric choke really run, and pump up a lot of gas to start. Maybe it would have been worse without the carb fan, but I doubt it. The only time I had an actual overheating (the car runs really hot to begin with) was when my radiator broke.

You would be perfect if you had the 160 degree in. I went through this last summer. Broke the bolt in the intake so I used it as an excuse to upgrade the intake...haha...the cooler you get these cars, especially in the summer the better off you are.

84 Z 305 ho auto. has a/c..........Electric fan and somebody cobbled a switch and wiring to turn on the fan at will. They did remove the sensor and wiring so I am unable to return the e-fan to automatic operation.......No overheating issues tho.
BUT somebody that doesn't know will not turn on the fan while driving and overheat the car. My only solution was to hunt up a OE belt driven fan and shroud assembly.
There is enough clearance to keep the e-fan in place and install the factory shroud/fan set up over it so I will have DOUBLE the air flow over the radiator if necessary.
Then I won't have to worry if mom rides my Z down to the grocery store and forgets to turn on the e-fan and it won't overheat and cook the motor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

85 IROC (donor car of mine) 5.0 H.O. L69 I think, 4bbl carb, 700r4 trans. It has both the belt driven and one elecric fan on the condenser side. I think its all original looking at it.

The air dam is a must, ya I had one down there but if its bent back just a little its not deflecting the air into the radiator. I made some metal brackets to help support it back to the foward position, but you cant make them to strong. Here's what my radiator looks like with 2 puller and one pusher fans on a griffin aluminum radiator. No cooling problems after I fixed the air dam on my 400 small block,

Just bought an 87 iroc w/ 305 tpi 5 speed. It is missing a module(?) That resides on the passenger side, next to the radiator. One connector goes to the fans, the other I dunno. Help, please.

The 3rd gen electric fans are activated by relays. On the dual, or heavy duty fans, the primary, driver's side fan is activated by the ECM, the secondary fan is controlled by a Fan Temp Switch which is in the passenger side cylinder head, between #6 & 8 spark plugs. The relays are generally located close to the battery, on the radiator support.
My 87, VIN code F, has dual, heavy duty electric cooling fans.

I need basic info on factory coolant fans. Please go to:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=150575
and post the year of your car, what your original engine is and whether it came with a belt-driven or electric coolant fan. Thanks.
