89 Camaro heater controls

The car doesn't have any heat. When you slide the top **** that has the off, max, bi-lev, vent, heater... it's very sloppy. If you take the radio out and you can see where when you slide the **** it selects the vacuum line for the heat or vent or a/c. Anyway if you touch that piece it's really loose and you can hear the air escape from it. I'm thinking this is why there isn no heat. Any input? I'll try and find the digital camera if no one can figure out what I'm talking about.

no that wouldnt account for no heat. i have an 89 as well and before i replaced my radiator i would have problems with heat fluxuations(some dauys i get heat some not) well it was cause i was constantly losing radiator fluid. i suggest check your fluid level. then if you have enough coolant check your heater diverter valve and if you havent replaced it yet replace it NOW. it will leave you stranded when it blows and its only 15 bucks at auto zone. it is called a Heater Diverter valve or a Heater control valve i dont hav ethe part number on hand. in your engine bay it is to the left of the engine passenger side right above the left valve cover. it will look like a mushroom with three tubes going into it and a vaccuum line to the top that opens the valve to let coolant flow freely to your heater core (i think)

what do you mean by no heat? Does it blow, but just cold? Or not blow at all? Also try this, when your car is off, slide the heat/air control from 1 side very quickly, back and forth. Stick your head up to the dashboard...can you hear a clanging sound in there? You should hear a vent/door type thing, i forget the name, clanking back and forth. If you dont hear that, could be stuck. Could also be a loss of vacuum that is keeping your heater closed....I would definetly at least grab some tape or something and try to patch up that vacuum line

If the control is bad(like you think it is), you will have heat, but it will come from the defrost ducts.

82 is correct. After fighting the problem for some time, I finally fixed it by swapping in a new 'selector' (which is apparently the piece, 86, that's giving you the problem, especially if you can hear a leak).
