No Fans, period
I've searched for this and read tons of posts but i still need to ask. The car is an'89 iroc, TPI 350. My problem is that the fans won't switch on. At first i noticed that i never heard the fans, but i knew the turn on was insanely high. I started reading all those willie's total fan control articles and wanted to try it. But i wanted to make sure they actually worked first.I read a post that said your fans will turn on with the a/c on....well mine don't. Had the car in traffic, was hitting about 235*...no fans. I looked at the radiator and there is something on the passenger side , maybe 1/3 of the way down. It's black, sticks out about 1"- 1 1/2" and has what apears to be like a metal contact. Is this anything i should look at, i thought well something came unplugged...searched and found no connectors that were homeless. Any help would be great i'll try to snap a pictue ASAP.
Thanks
Josh

That contact is not used on TG's. GMSPO supplies radiators as replacements that also work on newer GM vehicles. It's a low coolant sensor probe. On vehicles with a low coolant indicator light basically what happens is that when the coolant level is below the probe the light activates telling you to add coolant. 89, I know it well. Replace both fan relays. One should be on the pass side near the radiator, the other one is on the left inner fender to the left of the battery looking at it from the front. They are the same part. NAPA part number AR-279. It is very common for both of them to fail, the NAPA and later GM replacements are redesigned for better reliability. Don't waste time with manual switches and all these mods. It is a waste of time and just junks up the car with additional wiring. Before you replace the relays you can do one test. Pull EITHER relay, and with the key off look at the 2 heavier wires on the plug. ONE of those wires should read 12 volts. It gets voltage through a fuse link from the battery and is not key controlled. If you do have 12 volts on one of the wires don't even mess around, get 2 new relays.
