84 305 H.O. Fan Trouble

I'm having a problem with my fan.Since i've got the car it was working all the time even the engine was not running so i thought they connected directly without the sensor. But yesterday my fan failed and when you turn the key now there's this ticking noise which i suspect coming from the sensor because it's coming from the engine and now the fan doesn't work.By the the way i have a single electric fan not the belt driven ones.So what you guys think? What might be the problem here?If it was directly connected why it's not working now?Is there a way to check the fan like the paper clip thing on double fan setups?Where to connect the fan to make it work all the time?
