Coolant Temp. Guage Broken or Not?

My temp. gauge all of a sudden started pointing directly up (12 O'clock position).

I checked out some post on here and I decided that changing the temp. sending unit was a good start.

After changing it out the problem is still here. Is there a problem with the gauge or would changing the other temp. sensors at the front of the manifold make a difference?

there is the coolant temp sensor and a guage sender.

the guage sender is tested when the car is first about to start and the temp guage is suppose to peg to the highest point and then go back down, to the beginning.

i think you could test that by simply grounding the connection going to the sender.

it sounds like you maybe took ok the coolant temp sensor because at least the guage should of went down to zero and read nothing meaning the coolant temp is not registering.

last time i checked the guage sender i think was in the drivers side head, and the coolant temp sensor was in the front of the block.

The one I changed out was on the drivers side head roughly between first and 2nd exhaust pipe from the front. It is a single wire connector.

Did you happen to check the wire? I know with the fuel gauge, when the wire grounds, it peggs all the up to 12 o'clock. Did this happen right out of the blue, or was it after a repair, mod, ..etc?

Out of the blue.

I traced the wire as far as I could and did not find any damage or spots were it might be damaged. But again, I can only track it so far.

I guess I could pull the dash open and try a continuity test on the wire.

So the other two sensors on the front of the intake manifold have nothing to do with the gauge at all?

Well for those interested...

I took the dash apart to have a look at the gauge.

I pulled it out to do a continuity test on the circuit.

After which I found that my problem was the gauge itself. Apparently when you turn the ignition to "on" the gauges reset themselves like any car. What was happening here was that my gauge was getting itself wedge on the lip of the gauge casing.

The needle would turn right past the max point and strand itself on the lip of the guage housing. After a little tweaking I tested her out and no problems since.

Thats real common, I would get one while they are still available. Lot's of stuff for TG's are being dropped from GMSPO inventory almost daily.
