Whats this wire do?

After deleting my smog pump friday, I took my car out to make sure everything was ok. But, it started heating up really bad, so I took out on the interstate, got it cooled down and then drove straight home. Got home, popped hood, got back in car, temp just above 220 (usually never gets that high b/c previous owner had fan hardwired to stay on when the key is forward or the car is running). Then the check engine light comes on and I turn the car off and pop goes the weezle there goes my overflow lid shooting out into the eng compartment and coolant is spewing everywhere. So, I turn the key forward thinking ok, i'll have the fan on, it'll cool down. Fan didn't come on. So, i'm thinking ok, no fan, wtf? Left the hood open all night, next morning go out to inspect and start tracing wires from fan motor to a relay/sensor (not sure) behind pass headlight. This has wires coming from it (one being a solid orange, a solid black, a grn/wht and a brn/wht that I know for sure). The orange wire is going to some sort of splitter it appears. There is a single wire coming from the positive side of the battery and it goes to this cylinder shaped piece of rubber which has a solid black wire coming from it to some sort of relay/sensor/switch by the pass fender. It has another black/w pink stripe wire going to the alt and then this solid orange wire going to the relay/sensor/switch behind the pass headlight. I'm thinking this orange wire is the main power feed to the fan motor and maybe with me digging around the other day removing the smog pump I broke this wire off even more (it appeared already broke off and half *** taped to the little black cylinder piece already) and that maybe when I was jerking around in there I broke the orange wire off and that killed the power to the fan.

I know this is probably hard to follow, which is why i'm going outside right now to snap some pics and go get em' developed and then scan em off and show you wtf i'm talking about. Maybe that'll help better, but thought maybe i'd get some ideas or theories first.

Forgot to mention I do have a Chilton's manual and I looked at the wiring diagram and i'm pretty sure i'm right about the orange wire. But, I went ahead and bought a new fan motor anyway, may as well replace it wethere the it's the wire or not, but I just want to be sure that it is the wire that caused the fan not to work. If not, guess i'll try the other relays/sensors for the cooling system.

The orange wire is 'hot' power directly from the battery to the fan relay. If that wire is broken off then the relay cannot energize to turn on your fan.

Also a quick way to check your fan motor is to apply 12v directly to the motor.
