how is fan controlled on various models?

ok, I am a little confused here. I thought the cooling fan was controlled by the computer. From reading some of the posts, some are controlled by a coolant switch. Did this vary throughout the generation (some controlled by the computer and some by a switch)??

Does anyone know what is was for 85??

Mine is an 85 2.8L.

thanks.

What????? Its controlled by a coolant temperature sensor. I dont know about other years, but in my 84 the sensor for the fan in in the passenger side head between #6&8, and the temp sensor for the computer is in the thermostat housing.

Diggler86: So youre telling me that since your cars fan "works off the speedometer" , if your car is idling in park the fan wont come on?

no, the fan is on when im in park idling. it turns on when i start the car.

on the upward slope, it turns off at about 50 mph (and anything greater its off)
on the downward slope, it turns on at about 30mph (and anything less its on)
between 30 and 50 depends on which speed you came from, increasing or decreasing.

trust me, i couldnt figure it out for the longest time since i thought it was controlled by the temp as well, but it never corresponded. i have an led that tells me when its on. the ecm definately reads the speedometer to tell the fan when to turn on and off.

if you think about it makes sense, when your driving at high speed, theoretically anyway there would be more airflow coming up from the airdamn so the fan would not be needed. then, at low speed, you need the fan on to bring air through the radiator.

maybe i have a freak car? but thats how it works, im sure of it.
