running too cool

yup. too cool. even in 90+ degree weather, it seldom goes above 160. driving down the highway last night it was at 120.

i'm thinking the gauge is inaccurate. can anyone tell me how to test it?

thanks

get a themometer that reads high temperature and stick it in the radiator. it wont be exactly right cuz your gauge takes the temp in a different part of the engine.

You could have a thermostat that failed in the open position. Some of the newer ones do that now. I had one fail that way in my Grand Prix. Just about froze to death last winter till I figured out why I wasn't getting any heat.

I had another thought. You could open the hood, turn the AC off and let it idle. Watch for the electric fan to turn on. It's supposed to come on at about 220 or 228 degrees. When the fan starts, take a look at your temp gauge and see if it's close to 220.
