Funny, I just removed my heater core yesterday. It was leaking big time. A new one at Auto Zone was $17. I will install it in time for next winter about December of this year. In TX, I shouldn't need it until then. It was a PITA to get it out though.
One hose will come from the intake (to the left of the thermostat housing) and the other will come from the top of the water pump. As for the heater core, you will probably want it to fill from the top and empty from the bottom. If you are standing in front of the car, the right side will fill and the left will empty.

the core has two pipes coming into the engine compartment: the large one goes to the outlet at the front of the intake manifold; and the smaller pipe goes into the inlet at the rear of the manifold.
