What did the factory use to seal the nipple at the top of the water pump?

I just bought a stewert stage 2 water pump with the fitting at the top where the nipple screws into. My stock pump has no fitting at all, and I will be deleting my heater valve all together and running the hose directly to the top of the pump. My question is what did the factory use to seal the nipple on the earlier model cars. Also, what size is the nipple they used?

just so you know, the nipple on the water pump is the same as the one in the rad, you need one in the intake and one in the water pump/rad

any type of thread sealer will work, factory was probably a teflon based liquid/paste type sealer

just to finish this one up, it is 1/2" NPT and the liquid thread sealant works real good on the appropriate plug..
