Fan relay shot....again.

I had my fan relay replaced about 4 months ago, and yesterday i think it went out again.....exactly how hard would it be to hook up my fan directly to the battery and have a switch in the dash? Would it be safe? Any help is apreciated. thanks

I wouldnt do it that way. If the relay keeps going like that, there has to be something else going wrong too. If you are going to direct wire your fan, I would get a heavy duty relay and switch it through that.

Where did you get the relay? Chain stores are still selling the old design units. They had an inherent problem, GM supplies a redesigned unit under the original part number, so does NAPA. Also, inspect the socket for discolored connections and repair or replace the socket. If the motor were drawing excessive current usually the fuse link fails. The relays were a major problem especially in summer when the AC cycles the fan(s) on and off. To be brief, the old design had a long contact arm that got hot and caused the contacts to misalign causing intermittent or complete failure after a relatively short period of time. I bench tested the old design and after as little as 200 cycles the contact arm warped. The new one has a shorter arm and is beefier with a braid to the contact point eliminating the problem. The new one will be made in China, but it is very reliable.
