Lower thermostat??? Whats the deal??!

Hey guys, my 89 will warm up to about 240 everyday before it will cool to 220 - 230 for the rest of the drive,i know this isnt too hot, bot i want to maintain a 220 temp reading. I have an airdam and my (single) fan is set to always run. I want to install a maybe 170 thermostat but ive herd others talking about a chip or something I need to ajust for my system to accept this mod. PLease explain guys, give me as much info as you can. Oh and is running 220-230 going to have any long term effects? Thanks allot!!

Unsure about '89 but '91 will not perform well if thermostat changed without chip adjustment. Before anything is done, verify temp. gauge reading via a pyrometer. Gauges are not always as they appear. Have the dam ok, factory A/C require Lower Radiator Air Baffle in addition? Good Luck

Yo, I installed a high flow water pump on my bird with an 180 thermo. It appears as the car gets to about 225 w/ the fan on and than it drops to 160-170, than, due to my bent backward dam, it will heat up a bit. Today in high traffic and 90 degree weather the car stayed cool for an hour, than it got up like air might be getting into the system. Anyway I am not sure if lowering your thermo gets it to turn on as fast, but none the less I would look into it since it seems that lower the thermo the more messed up the guage gets???
