Cooling Question

Alright i got a quick question if anyon can help me..
I have a 1989 firebird with a 305 bored .30 over and heres my problem.. I recently replaced my coolant fan sensor/switch because I had to manually start my fan so the engine would cool and everything was fine from there but now this problem arrises where my cars temp gauge was at the middle which is 220 degrees and it was fine after i got the fan fixed but now its heating up to almost red line to where i had to pull over and wait for it too cool down.. as one time i forgot before i got my fan fixed i didnt jump my fan and my car redlined and it blew but after i got all that fixed i just dont understand how its getting hotter than its supposed to and as it is acting like the fan cant keep up with the temp and i got proper level of ccolant and everything but the air dam on it was torn off could it be i need a new one of those or a thermostat? the car has a new water pump and radiator if anyone could help me id aprreciate it but i am trading the car in a 1988 camaro within this next week so if anyone could help me that be great

I had a leaking radiator and the fan didn't appear to come on, the engine was smoking near the manifold. I could not run the car very long. After some time getting another radiator and also replacing the very hard to install thermistat, It now runs upto 220 but hasn't really gone over that. I've kept my driving to a particular distance and time until I can also address my gaskets. Are you sure your not leaking anywhere? I fixed my radiator supposedly, and the leak moved up the line. My therm is also not drilled to help it run cooler. My fuel pump was also replaced but as I was pulling the air inlet, I'm now curious about the life expectancy of the MAF. A recent car magazine reported on a new OEM replacement, I think it was SLP, that made a real sizable improvement of the air intake.
Since there is no traditional grille, the lion's share of feeding air is whisked up under the bumper so, yes, make sure the plastic spoiler air feed section in intact. I took off the downward flared section to work on my own radiator and to also try to replace my damaged nose which is concealed under the spoiler trim. It also aids in deflecting road debris that I am likely hampering.

I had a problem just like yours, my car kept heating up to almost the red line most of the time I drove it for the first times after I bought it. what I did is fill the radiator with new coolant, replaced the thermostat to a 180 degree one then I went to autozone and bought a new fan clutch but not the one that turns on by itself I bought the one that is always running. I think the one that turns on by itself is called a thermal fan clutch and the one I bought is called a non thermal fan clutch anywat it's aboutj $40 and that is all I did and now my car runs @ 180 all the time but remember that my car has the v-belt big fan so if yours has the electronic fans that probably won't work unles you want to try the thermostat and chage it to a lower like mine to 180 it doesn't take long about 5=10 min make sure you change the gasket and also make sure the bolts are tight. See if this helps you good luck

The thermistat took me several days...the bolts were next to impossible, trying several new tool purchases to come up with something. Not much fun, and now the gaskets so it all basically comes apart again..it's just too cold for me right now... Fall is gone
