Hi all
i have a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am (Recaro) 305 TBI 5.0 V8 and was wondering what the op temp of the engine should be? as i dont want to be over heating.

Optimal temperature for what? User comfort (how high are you comfortable watching that needle climb?) or thermal efficiency as far as the engine is concerned? For the former, that's up to you. For the latter, assuming the cooling system is up to snuff and all components are working as they should, the factory 195° thermostat is about right. If you get jumpy, maybe switch to a 180° version. For the best compromise, I try to keep the needle between 180 and 210°. An aftermarket gauge really helps (who's heard of an "accurate" 3rd gen factory temp. gauge ?)
