Its cooler, and cheaper to have serviced. Mine was doen when i bought the car, but ive seen the kits at the auto parts store for less than $60, you just need to have an empty system i think at first, then filler up.

Any one know if you can use the 134 stuff from the parts store to refill an empty system? and how much it might take?

They make a kit, so that you can do it your self, once the system is drained you can get in there and change everything out that is needed to be changed, i just saw the kit this weekend, but i didnt really pic it up and look at it close enough to see what all is involved. Might be worth looking into

The system won't get as cold with the new stuff. If you're system isn't leaking, and you can find someone that will service it with R-12, that's your best option. The new AC systems are colder than the old ones, but that's because they are designed a bit differently to take advantage of the 134A. The older systems, when converted, don't tend to get as cold as they did with the R-12 because of the different properties of the system and refrigerant.

I know my dad's mechanic quoted my ex's car at $120 to fix a leaking schraeder valve and fill it up with R-12, and he'd guarantee it for 6 months (if it were to develop a leak, he'd charge to fix the leak, but he'd recharge it with R-12 for free).
