Overheating ???????

im having this problem where my cars will temp gauge will steadily go up til it overheats and the fan never kicks on. I can put the ac on and the fan will turn on and the temp gauge will slowly go back down. Could it be the fan switch or the thermostat?

It is the fan switch.. Either the switch is non functional or the wiring hooking up to it has gotten too hot and broken off... Either one or a combination of both is the cause... The fan switch is located between the 6 and 8 cylinders on the passenger side cylinder head.. See this for more information on which switch to get: Radiator Fan Switch Alternatives

Repairing any damaged wiring (that connector sometimes gets brittle and breaks) will be the only additional effort.. The old sensor will unscrew and the new one will screw in.. Might drain the coolant from the block first using either coolant drain at the bottom of the block (one is plugged, the other has the knock sensor in it) to contain the coolant that will come out..
