82 LG4 carb intake to 86 TPI, coolant lines?

I just noticed that the coolant lines for my 82 LG4 go into my intake manifold, while for a tpi the go into this piece, not sure what it's called. Is that the only thing I would need as far as those two lines coming out the firewall?

That is a heater valve. This part isn't neccessary. Many people delete it. You could run one hose to the lower intake and the other to the radiator.

What does the heater valve do?

It blocks off coolant flow to the heater core. It is supposed to cut flow to the core when vacuum is applied. It is supposed to also act as a safety if your heater core fails. The plastic valves fail more often than the heater cores.
