irratic overheating?
while driving i noticed my temp just instally soared to as high as itll go so i quicktly pulled off the road and turned the engine off...put some more water/anitfreze into the resivor..started again it was down to 180 then once again soared quickly...
soo...i opened the radiator cap(the one where it warns u of pressure...ect) n i was thinkin i would get soaked in hot water n steam, but there was no pressure or spraying of water or steam. i put the cap on started the car and the temp was down to 160 and running fine, even drove it home with no abnormal temps.
could this be just a freak accident bc of the guage? or mabye a failing thermostat?

off the top of my head I would say that your t-stat is sticking. Picking up a new one for 5 bucks couldnt hurt, if you are running a standard fan with a fan clutch, your fan clutch could be toast. If you have electric fans you could have a bad relay, fan or an electrical problem.
I would start with the t-stat, and fan clutch. Those two are usually the culprits. You should also make sure your overflow has reserves at all times.
Good luck
Dave.

Ummm, no pressure when you opened it? When the engine was hot that is not a typical sign. Verify the gauge is correct (Close enough) as well as the rad cap.
