cooling issues

hi guys newbie to the site,
I have a 89 IROC Z28 and when i bought the car it had a blown head gasket, so i replaced it. When i finished the installation and put it back together with a new 195 thermostat, the engine overheated in about 5 to 10 mins. So i went out a bought a 160and no more overheating but it seems that it is lacking power now, My question is do you guys think i have a thermostat issue or is it something eles.

I got the radiator flushed out, someone told me that i might and exhaust leak but i cant hear anything. Is there an easier or more effective way of checking for exhaust leaks.
P.S. thanks for the input guys
