What's the best temp for a Thermostat?

I live in So. Cal so cold weather isn't a factor.
My car seems to run best before it completely warms up.
Lately my car begins to overheat on hot days when sitting at stoplights.
Running on the freeway it's fine. Only 1 fan ever comes on.
I was wondering if putting in a lower temp thermostat would help.
AutoZone sells 3 temps 160, 180, and 195.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Since it runs cool on the freeway it's unlikely to be the air dam or thermostat. I would suspect the second cooling fan first, then maybe something else like water pump or radiator.

EDIT: I checked the 91 manual, the second fan is supposed to come on when the A/C is on, the first comes on when the temp hits 230*

Thanks

I checked to see if the 2nd fan comes on with the AC
but the clutch to the AC isn't working so it doesn’t come on.

Back when I got my first car and smog devices didn't exist.
I used remove the thermostat all together and had no problem.

The good old days when you only needed fuel, air and spark.
No sensors to go bad. No computers to turn things on and off.
Fans where mechanical and turned with the engine.

I Know I'm just rambling on.

use at least a 180

I would recommend @ least a 180 degree thermostat. so you can get the oil warm enuff in the motor to burn off any condensation that builds up.

how far do you drive it in a day ? in one trip or do you start and stop it alot before the engine has a chance to fully warm up?

this really apllies in the colder months only

but all my cars and truck use a 180 thermostat with no problems

look in sig

Agree on the 180 norminally.

But if you are running modded motors, higher Comp ratios, ect.

fighting detonation and slightly on the edge as some are here,

the 170 is a good choice. That also assumes that you warm the

motor up before laying on it and not starting and going down to

the corner for a 6Pac and back In the warmer climates its

also a good hedge against problems as listed above.

Its all in the application
