Best or Normal operating temp for 5L TPI engine.
Hi all, I'm about to get a new chip programmed up for my Trans Am. I have a 1986 5L TPI.
The last owner has put two big aftermarket electric fans on all the time, but I wanted to connect it back up to either a sensor or the ECM.
So just wanted to find out what the normal or best temp to have the fans come on at is?
I have the 87 Digital Dash, so exact temp is hard to say, but it's with the fans on my runs a 1/4 way up. Between the start and 190 (I think). Unless I'm on a big drive or turn the fans off I don't think it goes in to closed loop.
All comments and advice welcome.
Francis.

Fan On Temp
I have a 350 in my Formula , and my Fans are set to go on at around 185 Degrees . My Normal Operating Engine Temp when Fully Warm is a Steady 210 Degrees . If you have a Mod Chip , you also might have to run a Lower Thermostat . Around 160 Degrees I Imagine .

i run a 180 T-stat in my car. i have the fan on temps set to 192.
i don't remember if i needed to set the closed loop temp lower or not.
i take it your getting an aftermarket chip, for about the same as what your going to spend on that chip, you can get the stuff to burn your own, & with a little reading,.. well a lot of reading of the stickies in the DYI Prom board here you can have a much better chip than you can go buy, plus you can make changes to it any time you want or need to.
