heater valve question

Am I suppose to have that valve in between the hose on the heater core? I have a 1986 berlinetta, 305, vin H, auto, computer controlled quadrajet, Air conditioning. The reason I ask is that won't I have hot air being pulled through the heater core when I have the air conditioning on? I don't have the air conditioning working right now to tell for myself but when I do do I need this valve or didn't my car come with one? If I do need it where do I hook the vaccum line to?

Well I guess I answered my own question. I tried turning the heat on then putting it to cool and the heat wen't away so I guess I don't need the valve. Thanks anyway.
