plugged in fan switch, fuse panel wire melted?

Diagnosing the primary fan not coming on, came to find out the switch connector above the starter was not plugged in. Plugged it in, as soon as i turned the key to accessories, heard a buzzing noise then a pop then smoke, come from the fuse area. seems like a wire in there melted or got damaged in some way. What causes this? At the time, the engine was cool, the fan wouldnt have normally came on at that time, i would think a wire would blow out when the fan is trying to switch on?

took a pretty good look at the wires coming off the fuse panel and could not see anything in there that looked melted, anybody have any suggestions?
