Engine in nuetral cooled down overheating issue....fluke?
My car started spiking up to 220 w/i seconds after sitting around 170 for a few minutes after I left my house. Out of sheer frustration as I was driving I put it in neutral and revved it around 4500 for 3 seconds, and instead of getting hotter and hotter, the SOB cooled right back down to 160* or so. WTF!!!???
Is that a normal thing to happen, the fast revving of the motor w/o load will spin the water pump faster therefor getting more coolant through the motor and the radiator?
-OR- Is that indicative of a bad Water pump and under normal driving the conditions, the water pump cannot pump enough coolant. Because this BS happens all the time. I have replaced the radiator cap THRICE now. And the water pump is a couple months old from Autozone.

Have you replaced you thermostat, it could be sticking closed until you rev the engine, and then it opens up. Just a suggestion.

Have you checked at what temp. your fan switch kicks on your fan(s)? The fact that the temp goes down after revving may just be random. Could be the fan switch is not connected properly. Have you done any work on your spark plugs lately? You may have inadvertantly unplugged your sensor.
Did you check to see if there is a pressure build up in the cooling system when you start the car cold- to check this just start the car and open the rad cap, if it drives out water (maybe 1/4 pint) when cold your head gasket is blown, you can also look in the rad with the motor running to see if there is any bubbling.
