I have two questions. 1. How is your fan wired? 2.Why do you have both sides of the switch hooked to the battery?

You need to use a relay. You are putting too much of a load on your wiring. There was a post that showed a diagram somewhee.

Like said above, the switch is only meant to pass a few hundered milliamps at most. Youll need to use a relay to turn the fan on and off. You can use a normally open relay rated for at least 25A from an autoparts store or something if the original wiring/relay is gone or damaged. The fan switch can then be wired to control the relay instead. Also dont forget to add a fuse if your using your own wiring.

You can wire a fan without a relay. A relay is just a sort of remote switch anyway so that you do not have to travel higher amperages inside of the car or wherever. If you have both a positive and a negative going to the switch then you have a problem. An electrical switch is installed on one side or the other of the current. A relay may be a better option but if you really don't know how to do that then one way to wire your fan would be to run a positive wire to the switch then run a wire comming out of the switch to the positive on the fan and then of course run your negative on the fan to a good ground. You could even run the negative to the battery terminal itself but that would ruin the whole purpose of having a negative ground which is to save a mess of wires. Relays are not that hard either. They just require and extra circuit to be run.
