coolant temp sensor

i have a 86 trans am tpi and i had a check engine come on i checked the code and it said the coolant temp circuit. i replaced the coolant temp sensor. and the same code is still coming up. the engine light does not stay on. when the engine light goes away i notice a fuel smell and only when the engine dissapears. i noticed when changing the coolant temp sensor there was a sensor right next to it that also has something to do with the cooling system. if anyone would could help it would be greatly appreciated

Re: coolant temp sensor

my coolant temp sensor is directly under the throttle body and right next to it to the left is another sensor with a 4 wire plug. i had to pull it out to get to the cts. i'm pretty sure it has something to do the the coolant system becuase when i pulled it out antifreeze came out so i'm not if maybe that sensor could throw the code for a coolant temp circuit

Re: coolant temp sensor

no this has nothing to do with the gauge. the car doesnt run hot or anything. but whenever it warms up it wants to die at low rpm take off. like i said when the engine light the car runs fine but when the engine light turns off it will the the die down thing and you can smell gas faintly. i replaced the coolant temp sensor but is still throwing the same code. The other sensor that i am talking about looks exaclty like the coolant temp sensor but is quiet a bit bigger. just curios what that is and if that could be the problem

Re: coolant temp sensor

Might double check, the coolant sensor (CTS) that the ECM uses is a two wire senson, black and white wires. The white wire sometimes looks yellow. What was the trouble code number?
