Why does my car run so hot?

Ok my temp will climb in the 220-240 range while driving on the highway for about 15 minutes. Driving around town is fine but if I drive for a while then the temp will start to creep into that range. Why is it getting so hot?

This started happening about 3 weeks ago. Before that it would run in the 180-200 range. I installed a new 160 degree thermostat to see if that was the cause but there was no change. I also flushed the coolant on Friday, that helped a little but its still running pretty hot. I installed a new water pump and radiator cap back in January when I put a new cam in. I also installed a new temp sensor in the head back in January after I got it back from the machine shop. My air dam is in place and is in good condition. I have a mechanical fan, could the clutch be going out maybe? The radiator could be the stocker, but im not sure. Any ideas here would be great.

Re: Why does my car run so hot?

I have the same problem I think as you. So any insight here from people would greatly help me as well. I just changed the thermostat and the radiator seems to be working fine, but the car still seems to be running hot. Temp gauge wont go past half way mark or anything, but the car is definately running hotter than it should be. After I drive around for awhile you can feel very warm air coming through the vents as if the heater was on almost full blast. BTW, I didnt want to make a whole new thread because it seems like we have similar problems and any answers to you or me might apply to both of us.

Re: Why does my car run so hot?

OH man! I have the same problem as you to LOL. Im fine if i run under 60 mph but the faster i go the hotter i got, if i do 75 'i live here in cali" im in the red. I also put in a 160 thermo. I took out all the radiator hoses, and ran ones strait to and from the block and to the raidiater by passing the heater core ect. Still flipping hot. I know my fan isnt that great, i got a single fan on my 305 tbi, but still 70 mph winds hitting the radiator should be cool,,,, unless the radiator is fuked, but if ihave a leak in my hoses it shoots out, so i dont think the radiator is fuxored, maybe its just corroded inside or yea HELP!!! lol anyone fix this prob yet!!!!

Re: Why does my car run so hot?

Yeah it could be the Clutch on the Fan. If you can turn the fan by hand and there is NO resistance the clutch is bad and should be replaced.

Couple other thoughts, do you have a shroud around the fan and how close is the fan to the radiator? The fan will pull air from all directions and not thought the radiator if it is to far away or has no shroud.

Re: Why does my car run so hot?

I would say that the 160 t-stat is to low . A 180 will work better keeping the coolent in the radiator longer to cool of . You want to slow the flow down a little .
