Fan trouble runing out of Ideas

I keep having problems with the fan... its a 305 tbi '88 with a single fan. The fan seems to come on when ever it feels like it. When i got the car I thought the fan was rigged to run direct. When I keyed the ignition to the on position the fan would come one. Well I pulled the relay and it was melted. So i replaced it and then it would not start. So I changed the passenger side temp switch for the fan. Was perfect for the first time then i would not kick bank on. Now it seems the relay is locked in the on position just like when I got it. So I tried to tap the relay with a screwdriver. Nothing then after about 20 min of driving the fan turns off and wont kick back on. Anyone have any idea where to look next?? The car nly over heats after the 20 min at stops and when going up hill air dam is in place. Any ideas Apreciate it everyone...-RevZ28

I have the stock gague and aftermarket gauge installed and it runs to about 240-230 when up hill but as far as i can tell with everything installed it shouldnt be anywhere near that temp...

i just wired my dual fans to a toggle inside the cab. in order to check your wiring i would start with that fan switch you have on the pass side. with the car off clip a test wire to the pass side switch wire and then ground it. turn on car. if the fan comes on the it could be that switch you have.
