Engine: 89 L98 TPI since 2000.
Transmission: NOW A T-5 as of 3/19/08
Axle/Gears: 373s
installing a coolant temp sensor

My 86 had a 305 4bbl i put in a L98 tpi in 2000. I still have the coolant temp connection in the engine bay. My question is where on the 305 did the coolant temp sensor originally go. When I pulled the 305 i didn't remember where it was.

The gauge sender is in the driver side head, the ECM sensor is in the water neck.

By water neck I think he means on the front of the base of the tpi in easier terms.

Since he's talking about the 305(LG4), I think Apeiron really meant the water neck, where the upper radiator hose connects. Whereas, on the L98 it's on the vertical front-and-center of the intake manifold.

However, I'm not exactly sure if the water neck is correct for the LG4. Another possibility is that it could've been directly in the intake manifold, on top, near the front.

Regardless, the connector and harness will probably reach all three different places we've mentioned, if that's what the initial question was about.

The aforementioned gage sender is in the driver side head on both engines, so that connector shouldn't be an issue and should reach ok(although senders and harness connectors changed during the generation).

The only other temp "sensor," actually the fan switch, is located in the passenger side head on both engines. So that one shouldn't be an issue either.

I think he said he swapped the 305 for an l98...I dunno its doesnt really matter lol im confused.

Exact on that swap. I wonder of the TPI sensor and my 305 coolant temp connector will be the same? Or sould I buy a 305 collant sensor and put it in the TPI engine? It's been a while not knowing how my temp was doing. Luckily I only drive it 20 miles a week.Thanks guys

You guys say it's on either side of the heads. on top or front?Just want to rewire my harness and clean my engine bay.

Can you install the sensor connector on wrong?
I originally had it disconeected and my MPG suffered, and then, i put it back, yet still it sucked.

I wonder if i should swap it the other way or it not matter at all?
