coolant temperature wiring

Okay i have my stock wiring for the coolant temp. I splice another wire to an aftermarket gauge and the gauge is reading nothing. What could be the issue?

Re: coolant temperature wiring

if i'm not mistaken, that sensor runs off of ohm resistance. Does the sensor share a rating (cold or hot) as the new guage you put in? I believe that the box for the guage should have this information for reference.

Re: coolant temperature wiring

are you trying to run both at the same time? or just the aftermarket one. because if i remember correctly when installing my autometer temp gauge, they would not work simultaneously. you have to wire up just one or the other. also, are you using the aftermarket temp sender?

Re: coolant temperature wiring

Aftermarket gauges usually cannot be used with the stock sensors (different ohm ratings), unless they explicitly mention that.

Also, multiple gauges cannot be connected to a single sensor, then both gauges will show incorrectly. One gauge per sensor.

Hope this helps.

Re: coolant temperature wiring

Anyone got a 'how to' on installing an aftermarket temperature gauge?

Re: coolant temperature wiring

If you are adding an aftermarket temperature guage, you need to drill and tap a hole on the block side of the thermostat or somewhere in the block or head water jacket. Then install the aftermarket sensor and wire it to the aftermarket guage. I have done this and it works well.
