AC and Cooling Fan Question

86 Camaro with a single electric fan setup. Should the fan always run when the AC is engaged or does it just cycle depending on engine temp? Seems like when I come to a stop the AC temp increases quite a bit until I'm moving again. All AC pressures are within range according to my guages but I think the problem also lies inside my evaporator box with a big gap between the core and the firewall that I'm assuming air is going around instead of thru the core. Someone has hacked alot of the ac stuffs inside the box so I've been restoring what I could but dont have an actual picture of the inside of the box with the correct setup. If anyone happens to have a picture would you mind sharing it ? I dont think the electric fan is running all the time with the AC which I assumed it would do to keep the air flowing thru the condensor. Am I incorrect in assuming that it should run all the time with AC engaged ?
I dont have any overheating problems and the fan does come on when the ECM triggers it so its obviously working in that respect just not with the AC

Any input graciously accepted

Re: AC and Cooling Fan Question

How much hotter is the A/C getting at stop lights? What is your weather/humidity like outside?

My fans run all the time with the A/C on, and even then the A/C will warm up during long stops, bumper to bumper traffic. I've seen it go from 35° to 45° and sometimes even 50°. That's with two fans going. With your single fan it's going to have a bit more trouble keeping things cool compared to the dual. But not that much more.

Re: AC and Cooling Fan Question

Well while driving on the interstate the temp averages around 40 to 50 degree's but in stop n go traffic it goes up to 70 degree's. I had replaced everything condensor, evap, compressor, etc to convert to 134a. I also did the same procedure on an 85 Delta 88 I have with a 403 in it and the temps on it go as low as 35 degree's but never above 45 even in stop n go traffice but that car has the mechanical fan with a heavy duty clutch. So I've had good results with the conversions. I'm going to open up the evaporator case and see if I can isolate the air flow thru the evaporator better since it has about a 3 inch gap between the back of the evaporator to the firewall. I figure the air is rushing past the open gap instead of thru the evaporator due to path of least resistance. I dont know who butchered the air conditioner before I got the car but they seem to have done a good job lol ;(. The old evaporator had a screen stapled to it (screen like used in house windows) which I wasnt sure if that was done at the factory or if someone got silly with it. I guess I will have to check the fan status with the AC on and see whats going on. All other small engine cars with electric fans I've seen the fan run constantly when the AC is turned on so thats what made me think something is up with mine.

Is there a seperate relay that the AC uses to engage the fan by chance other than the ecm relay for high temp cooling ?

Thanks for the reply
