temperature switch not working?

i searched, but non of the threads seemed to pertain to my question.

i dont have anything stock, so the ECM doesn't control anything.
i was having overheating issues when i put together my new motor(stroked out 350 to 395, 10.8:1) i finally listened to my neighbor and bought VOLVO fan. the thing works awesome. it will bring the temp down from 245 to 185 in a matter of 5 mins while its idling in the garage!!!!

problem is the fan doesnt always turn on at the 185* mark. (that why it got to 245*.....)
i have a temp switch relay from summit
Summit SUM-890015

what could be the problem. the temp switch does not have any teflon on it
any suggestions........

Re: temperature switch not working?

What temperature thermostat do you have installed ?

I read an article recently where the fellow suggested a 170 degree F thermostat (special order) and a temperature switch set at 185. He felt that combination was the best mix. I believe the temperature is being sensed in three places on your engine: The thermostat that allows the coolant flow, the heat sensor that feeds the meter and the temperature switch for the fan.

If you had a way to measure temperature at the temperature switch for the fan maybe you might find it IS switching at 185 degrees (at that spot on the engine). Just a guess.

Re: temperature switch not working?

thats what i was thinking at first, but then i realized it was @ 245 and still not turning on. i would a agree with with you if it was turing on @ say 195.

is there a way to check the relay. im gonna turn the car on in a few minutes see what it does

the thermostat is 180

Re: temperature switch not working?

ok, checked the relay, seems to be working fine.

i hooked up the temp switch terminal to a ground and the fan turns on no problem..... (with the key in the on position)

so the last thing ..... the temp switch???

i installed it in the back of the intake manifold (rpm air-gap)
you think it might not be getting coolant flow at this location
camarorider u might be right in a way.
maybe there isnt even coolant flow at the location of the temp switch and thats why the fan is not turning on.....
all connections seem to be fine
any ideas
