Best Coolant for Third Generations Cars
I keep seeing the same issues with either Firebird or Camaro is running too hot.
I have a Restored 1985 Trans Am with 305 LG4 Engine with all GM Cooling System that always ran hot prior to upgrading the entire system. More so with the air conditioning on and if stuck in traffic.
Recently upgraded the entire cooling system including the following New GM Parts:
Radiator
Water Pump
Thermostat- 195
Radiator Cap
Coolant Tank with Cap
Air Dam/Spoiler- Revised GM Version- 3 Sections
Instead of Normal Coolant and Water Mix, I went with Evans NPG+ Waterless Coolant.
Wow , what a difference !!!! Car runs alot cooler that it used to. I do not have to worry if I am stopped with the AC on and car runs at least 20 degrees cooler than it used to, from what I see from the Gauge.
I am sure all the new parts do help, but once converted, there is no need to change it again since water is out of the picture.
The main thing about converting to th Evans NPG+ Waterless coolant, the block will need to be drained. My mechanic is a Pontiac Mechanic that started his own business in Glen Rock NJ, so he does all of my work.
The price per gallon is a bit Steep, about $30 bucks a gallon. A 5.0 Liter Engine will need 2 Gallons for sure.
I think it is worth it
I thought this may help some of you guys out

Re: Best Coolant for Third Generations Cars
If you wanted your car to run cooler why did you go with stock stuff?
You could have got an aftermarket water pump and maybe 180 degree or 160 degree thermostat, an after-market radiator and dual fans if you dont have them.
Also did you first test the regular coolant WITH all the new stuff and then try the other stuff?
I personally have no over heating issues, so i'll just stick with regular cheap coolant.

Yes, I have tried them all, from Prestone to Peak to Dexcool. Does not compare in my opinion, but I understand your point as well. I spent alot of time and money on the car so far in the 20 years that I have owned her, another 60 buck in coolant is worth while to me.
Aftermarket Parts was not an option since I want to keep the car as Factory Original as possible. From the Oil filter to thermostat to spark plugs, I only use Original GM Parts.
Thats me

Re: Best Coolant for Third Generations Cars
Maybe it is how your car gets air to the engine. I made two changes to my 305 TBI. I switched to TPI Air induction - removing the TBI OEM air cleaner and I switched to 180 thermo. For the last two years my car runs at 190 or below on average in all situations (air on, in traffic, highway, 90 degree days). I also change my coolant twice a year (spring and fall) because I believe in keeping fresh coolant in the car. Never heard of the waterless but would love to check it out. Is there a website?

Re: Best Coolant for Third Generations Cars
True. Well let me re-state, I do only use GM Parts on my TA, but fluids are a different story.
Thats about it
Evans Website:
http://www.evanscooling.com/
- Oil- Amsoil Synthetic 5w-30
- Coolant- Evans NPG+
- Transmission- GM Dexron. Used to have Amsoil Synthetic Trans Fluid, but issues with leaking trans fluid made me switch back some time ago. No more leaks since I switched.
- Brake Fluid- GM
- Rear End Gear Oil- Amsoil Synthetic Gear Oil
- Front End- Amsoil Grease
Thats about it
