Another Cooling Fan Issue "Real Serious"

I need help finding a fan diagram or solving a unusual fan issue for 85 IROC, I searched in the Administrators post above but the link does not exist anymore.

I have also looked at the newer diagram but grounding the green/white wire does not work for my car.

Black wire from relay to fan is properly grounded.

Orange and Brown/White wire... I have no clue what to do or where to look to see if these are working. All I know is that the Brown/White wire is still very hot (ouch)

Fan work separately from the car. New relay and fuses installed. I need a quick fix (ignition on fan), I will try the temp sensor later.

Im a little lost on what to do please help a fellow IROC Owner

Please at least help me Im one of the few who actually did his homework. Can I at least get tips on how to convert to a mechanical fan. Thanks Again.

Re: Another Cooling Fan Issue "Real Serious"

I'm looking at the wiring diagram in my haynes manual, and it looks like:

brown - relay coil positive, hot in run
green/white - relay coil negative - ground to turn fan on in run
red or orange: fan relay power
black/red - fan power wire, only hot when relay is "on" (green/white grounded)

If you've got a multi-meter, unplug the fan relay, and make sure the relay is getting power. Check voltage across the brown wire and chassis for 12v when the ignition is on, and across the red or orange wire and chassis for 12v in any key position.

If the brown wire is getting hot, then something is drawing too much current through it. The relay coil shouldn't draw nearly enough power to make the wire hot. If the fan motor is worn out, it can draw too much current and make the larger gauge wires (red and black/red) hot, but it shouldn't affect the brown one.

The fan gets it's power from the main fusible link near the battery, I would also check and make sure that's not blown.

I found a wiring diagram which may help:

Re: Another Cooling Fan Issue "Real Serious"

Here are my results...

Installed aftermarket fan and relay, the issue still exist however...

Large Orange wire only reads 3.46V

I Grounded the Green/White wire but there was no response

Everything else reads 12V except the Black Wire (Ground) which bolts to the frame

Problem is when I jump Brown and Orange wire the fan will come on, also is there a second relay between the fuse box and fan relay by the radiator?

Re: Another Cooling Fan Issue "Real Serious"

Problem Solved! Thanks to all who responded. The issue was with the power wire that didn't supply enough voltage (3.46v Orange to Relay)

If anyone faces this same problem follow the secondary +power cable from the battery and check voltage and resistance. I went ahead and installed a aftermarket electric fan 14" $30 est. which has a big difference over the original and the coolant temperature switch with a toggle switch just in case I need her to cool down quicker or forget to activate the fan. I wish I took pictures but I was in too much of a hurry and excited!

Things to check (Mulit Meter) anything between 11.6-12.6 is good
1. Ground (Check resistance or voltage between ground wire and battery +)
2. Power (Smaller + leading from battery terminal follows to relay)
3. Relay (Jump - and + if you dont have a multi meter)
4. Coolant Temperature Switch (Passenger side by exhaust manifold)
5. Just to be on the safe side check battery voltage (11.6-12.6) or look at the dash board gauge
