Question about cooling fans
1991 Z28 350. I recently installed the factory 195 degree thermostat. I started the car and it warmed up to 180 i guess, the needle stopped on the gauge at the dash between 100 and 220. The cooling fan came on, but it seemed like it came on early. Is the fan supposed to run constantly at 180 at idle or is it possible that the fan switch has been replaced with a lower temp. switch. The temp needle stayed steady, but I don't like the idea of the fan constantly running. Eventually the wires will melt or the motor will burn out. Thanks.

Re: Question about cooling fans
No, the electric fan should rarely kick on. The factory ones don't come on until over 220 degrees. It would be a good guess that your car had aftermarket lower temp thermostats and fan switch.

Re: Question about cooling fans
Sometimes, owners install lower temp switches because they have been having problems. Being this time of the year, make sure it's not on because your ac compressor is running due to the defrost being on. This may well cause the fan to come on as well. Might want to consider just running a cooler thermostat than the fans switch is, for example, don't run a fan switch at 180 with a 190 thermostat as it will stay on most all of the time. You can run a 180 switch with a 170 thermostat. Thermostat must always be colder than fan switch to have system operating properly. Just a thought, good luck, Scott.............
