no temp gauge

Ok i have a question i just bought a 91 camaro rs the guy before me, hooked up a switch to a household extension cord and ran it to the fan. When i fire up the car the temp gauge MAYBE goes up i dunno but if it does its not enough to really tell. Now before i start tearing into stuff i wanted to see what you guys think and what kinda tests i can perform to help locate the problem.

Thanks

The previous owner crudely installed a manual fan switch.

When your car is cold, and your HVAC set to OFF, start the car and check the cooling fan.

You do not want it operating at that time.
