Heater Fan Issues

Hello all. First post here.

I have a 1992 Camaro that I am having some major issues with the heater fan.

For a while now the fan hasn't worked either with the heater or the A/C.

I started today trying to figure it out becasue I have to start driving the car fairly soon. Defrost in the morning is a necessity.

I checked both fuses (good) checked continuity of the speed selector switch and it is good. I was able to manually power the fan my hotwiring it momentarly from the battery. I could also do the same if I took out the relay and jumped the two terminals on the wiring.

So I know the fan motor works... just don't know how to get it to turn on with the controls.

I started working on the temp and selection controls and found that the selector switch mech was broken. I can manually hold it together and all the vents change like they should but nothing triggers the fan to start.

Is there another switch somewhere that I am missing? How does that selector switch work? I think it has some sort of vacuum but not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Wecome to TGO. A search is always a good thing on this site. Here's a link to get you started, post #5.

I "believe" this is what you need for the broken part: Valve Vac Sel GM part # 16032395. The number is good on GMPartsDirect.

Yes, vacuum. Defrost is the default.

Re: Heater Fan Issues

Thanks. So I took a look at that post and checked both places. I replaced the one behind the HVAC unit and verified that I have 12 volts there. I looked and couldn't find the one up in the engine but I do have 12V at the relay.

Still have no fan. I don't have the new vac switch yet. I'll have to order that tomorrow.

Any more ideas?

Re: Heater Fan Issues

finally found a new(used) vac switch at the wrecking yard. Guess GM discontinued the part. Installed that. No change.

Checked the power to the speed selector switch. 12v on the brown wire going into the switch and voltage coming out of the different legs when the switch is turned. Also tried jumping the various speeds manually with a wire and no result.

So I'm guessing the problem is somewhere under the hood but where to look?

Help please......
