Electronic/Digital Climate Control

Is there a way to put a GTA Electronic/Digital Climate Control unit or a aftermarket climate control unit in a 1983 Pontiac Trans Am?

Re: Electronic/Digital Climate Control

I have a 87 GTA with Electronic Climate Control. It's the same thing you have now but with motors instead of cables controlling vents and temp. It's not Automatic it's very disappointing. In my case the temp slider don't work it's stuck in the middle. These units are hard to find in junk yards they were only offered with on 87 & 88 T/A's and GTA's with the digital dash. The control head units were used in the 6000 STE and the Cadillac Cimarron 84-88 I found one yesterday in Blue Island it wires up the same but has green lighting and chrome buttons. There is something wrong internal on my car because the problems remain. Other differences are the blower resister and relays probably the whole A/c box! You would be better off using "Auto Climate Control" from a Corvette. I believe the C4 maybe compatible with my stock wiring. True Auto Climate Control also uses a device called the programmer I've seen these listed for Bonneville SSE's and temp sensors. I've been researching this mod for some time now! It's my belief that Pontiac intended on offering this as well as other Vett options on the GTA but GM wouldn't let them, and now Pontiac is dead, go figure!!! After all the GT in GTA means Gran Tourer like premium 2+2 lux sports cars the world over and very sheik in the 80's! I will probably use C5 Corvette Dual Zone Auto Climate Control because of the time and effort required, and because I want to fully modernize my car. Like stopping all the rattles, stiffening the structure adding IRS, and a 6 speed automatic, improving the many interior fit and finish flaws like dash piece panel gaps. Perfecting my Pop up Projector HID headlight mod (I hate it when people remove the pop ups from cars) After all since the EPA killed Pontiac there will never be a retro thirdgen GTA with all the modern luxury's. I'm not saying all cars should be luxury cars, but at over $30k the features should be available not standard(some don't like it but at least available) Nice to see theirs someone else out there interested in this mod. If I ever get the cash together I'll do a trend on my progress. Hope I pointed you in the right direction toward your mod, feel free to ask me any questions about what I said I try to be as factual as possible(This sh**s expensive and time consuming I hate to send you down the wrong road!) If you still want the factory non Auto but Electronic unit let me know, if I get started on my mod I'll give you a good deal! Good luck

Re: Electronic/Digital Climate Control

If i was to add electronic/digital climate control i would
adapt parts from an early/mid 80s cadi such as seville
or eldorado for the behind the dash parts and use the
control head from an audi 5000 from around 1984-89
-this is a GM supplied part and is the same as on GM
cars except has black buttons ,red backlighting and red
led display for use on TAs with red lighting, could also
use parts off the audi control head on the GM head if
the audi wiring is different. might have to make up a
new radio/heat-AC trim panel-real easy if you have the
means.

Just curious if there has been any progress in this area in the last two years.

Re: Electronic/Digital Climate Control

Is this a 87-88 GTA climate control you're referring to? (It's part # 16024523-1.) I've had it a while with a bunch of other 3rd Gen Firebird/Camaro stuff and couldn't figure out exactly what years it went to. Actually, almost threw it out since it's not in perfect condition due to a dent in the top left.

Re: Electronic/Digital Climate Control

Ive been trying to track down a GTA hvac box and panel so i could make an arduino application for it to give myself auto climate control.

Unfortunately no parts have come up yet. Corvette swap sounds good, but i imagine parts behind dash are much different due to dual zone... yet i do like dual zone..
