But like the title says I have an 86 firebird and I would really like to try and replace the heating core in it myself, and I was hoping someone here could help me figure out how to do that before I have to admit defeat and go find a profesional

Some get at it from up top, removing the dash pad and going in that way. I did mine from the bottom, under the pass side under-dash cover. It's a PITA either way - if you attack it from the bottom, there is at least one screw holding the cover on it that you can't see - you just have to feel your way up there, twisting your body in all sorts of ways that God never intended, to get to it. If I remember, they are 7mm bolt heads, I used a 1/4 rachet with a 2 inch extension, and breathed like a birthing mother through some of the worst cramps I can remember to get that last little screw!

Remove the panel under the dash, and the trim panel below the map pocket on the dash. Remove all the screws you can see in the heaterbox cover, and then use a very long extension or a few extensions to get the last screw on the top. There's a slot right below the map pocket that gives a clear shot to the last screw. The rest is all fairly standard. Just go slow and don't force anything.

So the 'Birds have a slot in the dash to get the last screw? Sweet! Camaro's are missing that little trick!

Drew's got it! Its really that simple......KINDA.......You just have to "twisting your body in all sorts of ways that God never intended, to get to it."- camaronewbie LOL.

I took my pass seat out when I did mine 2 yrs ago.
