Thermostat housing seal

Hi all,
Been learning alot of good stuff here. I recently bought an 87 Z28 IROC. I replaced the thermostat this morning and I couldn't get the housing to seal back up. Some one before me must of striped the intake because one bolt is a 9/16 and the other one is a 5/8. I tried gasket maker , regular gastket, and both together but it wont seal up. Any ideals? I can see this car is going to be a challenge

Re: Thermostat housing seal

Is it an aftermarket housing or a stock one? Those cheaper chrome housings tend to warp, making it impossible to seal. I would take the housing out and lay it on a flat surface and see if it is level.
