leaking coolant from the bellhouseing?
ok so i've been searching for a while and i cant find any thread on this problem yet so i figured i'd ask. (if there is a thread that i missed that will solve my problem just copy and past it please) My 1988 305 tpi just started leaking i decent amount of coolant from what looks like the bellhouseing of my trans. Now, i know there is no coolant in my trans so i must be coming from above and running down but when i look from up top into the engine bay i cant see anything. I'm 80% sure it is one of those freeze out plugs. I was wondering if anyone has replaced these before. do i have to pull my whole engine? or just remove the trans and try to get to them that way. Whats the easiest way to remove the trans? ANY advice will help. i dont really want to start taking stuff apart that i dont have to.
Re: leaking coolant from the bellhouseing?
From what I've heard, taking off the trans is the best way to get to them; never done it myself, so you'll have to look it up or ask someone else.
I had a leak coming from there. I thought it was the freeze plug, but when I took it to the mechanic, found out it was the corner of the intake manifold gasket. (manifold gasket will leak while running and will drip a lot for a while after shut off, until coolant level is below that point). just as much of an expense (was in the middle of a semester, didn't have time to do it myself), but probably easier than trying to drop the trans yourself.
anyways, Check there also before tearing things apart. may be worth the minor expense to have a trustworthy mechanic track down the leak for you if you can afford it.
