broke fan switch

I have had this running hot while idling problem. My car does not over heat just runs hot like 238 degrees. But it idles like crap and dies. So after checking fuses, coolant level and condition, radiator blockage. I came across this, the fan switch on the passenger side of the engine between the six and eight cylinders has the connector broke off and the wire is laying on the header. The terminal is broke and the connector is melted. Can I just hook the wire to the pin out of the sensor? Does it have to be water tight?

Re: broke fan switch

Yes you can. This runs the fan - without it no electric fan operation. The switch gets hot and creates a ground that activates the fan relay - if you ground the wire, the fan will run with key on.

Re: broke fan switch

The connection between the two were Never water tight!!! So just take the pin and reconnect it for now, but I would defently plan on making a trip down to a wreckers yard and grab a used connector/clip from another GM car, and also get a new fan switch so that you can use the new/used connector. The pin should not be left out in the open for too long, and left as is, it could shake/vibrate off again!!!

Re: broke fan switch

Here's what you need (depending on your year)...
http://www.tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/772

Also, ask for AC Delco part # D1855B for the fan switch, it'll turn on at 215* rather than the stock 238*(?).
