Electric fan and ECM question

Is the electric fan on my 86 Trans Am (LG4) computer controlled? I'm removing the ECM and going with a Holley carb and MSD ignition. If it is controlled by the ECM how can I keep my stock electric fan working without it?

Re: Electric fan and ECM question

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't 'believe' that the fan is ecm controlled.

Re: Electric fan and ECM question

I think it may be. If it is, the relay is grounded by the computer, which activates the fan. I believe this is the dark green wire which can be wired directly to a switch anywhere in the car. Otherwise, the fan is grounded through the temp switch in the side of the head which grounds the circuit at a predetermined degree. This is also a dark green wire which can be gounded through a manual switch as well.

Re: Electric fan and ECM question

I'm confused. If the fan is turned off and on by a temp switch mounted in the head then what role does the ECM play in the operation of the fan?

Re: Electric fan and ECM question

I am not 100% it is not controlled by the computer. I was giving you both scenarios

Go to Technical articles section on this site, then down to electrical, then click on the fan system you have and it will all be revealed. Have fun
