AC needs recharging... solution besides taking it to a shop?
apparently its pretty spendy to have a shop recharge my old AC. like 400 bucks. is there an altenative to getting robbed just for my AC to work?

I believe other guys on this board have used it with success. Before you try it, are you sure that all you need is a recharge? If your system is leaking, you will just waste time and money recharging it without fixing the leak.
I highly recommend doing a search in the cooling forum to see what you can find out.

no i am not sure, is the only way to test for leaks to take it to a shop? i did a bit of searching and reading, but a lot of the threads are like three years old.

The best way to check for leaks is to evacuate the system with a vacuum pump and see if it holds vacuum.
Before I did that, though, I would try to determine the state of the charge. If it just needs 'topping off', there probably is no reason to do that... but if it is essentially empty, you should do the vacuum check.

you can rent all the equiptment at autozone, they also have a video with alot of good info for ac
