electric fan mickey mouse

Hi guys,

can anyone tell me how to wire the oem electric fans on a 1990 Camaro iroc so that they both run as soon as I turn the key?

I heard all you have to do is splice the wires and run them to the positive battery terminal. My problem is there are two wires going to each of the fans...i'm guessing one wire is for power and the other is for the ground. Please help!

Each fan has a relay. You need to do it there. There is a wire going to each relay, that when grounded, turns on the fan. The primary fan gets it's ground signal from the computer, the secondary one from the fan switch in the passenger side head. All you really have to do is locate which wires these are and ground them. Key on fans on. Are you sure you want to do this in the winter?

I live in Southern California and I'm stuck in traffic about 90 percent of the time. When I'm not stuck in traffic, I usually get cheap thrills in desert or mountain highways wearing down my tires. It sounds like it's pretty easy to do plus I hear the third gen camaros run hot to begin with.

Why bother? The fans aren't going to do a darn thing before the thermostat opens. The radiator would be ambient temp with them on or off before the stat opens. And the thermostat will open soon enough in South California traffic and desert driving. I'd say leave the fan wiring stock (there are soooo many members here trying to figure out how to "fix" the wiring back to stock from past owners).

A simple aftermarket fan switch is a plug and play deal. And in S. California, once the fans turn on, they're probably going to stay on until you shut the car off. I run a 200/185° fan switch in Texas and the car stays at 190-200° most of the time in city traffic. (Both fans on, A/C on, 180° thermostat open). On the highway it will go back down to 180° with A/C off or 190° with A/C on. You save a little bit in wear and tear and lifespan by not having the fans on before the stat opens up as well.

The 200/185° fan switch will turn both your fans on if the primary (chip controlled) fan is still off. Chances are your car won't be able to get to 184° during the summer time. So the fans are essentially on all the time anyways. Turning on the A/C will keep the fans on all the time too..... During winter, this works well too. As it allows your car to warm up to 200° before the fans turn on. Decent heat output from the vents. And the fans will be on very rarely.

Some members like the 176/166° fan switch. But it's too low for cold days. And it's essentially the same as being on all the time, because even a 160° thermostat in north climates isn't going to get down to 165° in the city in order to shut the fans off. On the highway (40 mph+), the fans on our cars shut off since the fans being on impedes the flow of air at higher vehicle speeds.

I've tried 160 and 180° thermostats. There is essentially no difference. Because at 70° ambient temps, the car would run at 175° on the highway with the A/C off (160° thermostat) or 180° on the highway with the 180° thermostat.

The only time the 160 stat makes a difference is in winter months when the temps are say 50° or colder. And during that time, you don't really want to run the car at 160° as you'd want to run the heater in those temperatures. 160° coolant temps will drop fuel economy by about 1.5 mpg. The difference between 180 and 195° coolant temps is 0.5 mpg. (Verified on a C4 Corvette with L98 and showing digital instant fuel economy and digital coolant temps)
